First Russian Petrov to race in F1 Renault

Vitaly Petrov will become the first Russian to race in Formula One after former champions f1 Renault named him on Sunday as their second driver for the 2010 season.
The 25-year-old from Vyborg, near the Finnish border, was the runner-up in the GP2 support series to Germany’s Nico Hulkenberg, now with Williams, last year.

Petrov will partner Poland’s highly-rated Robert Kubica at the team.

Media reports have suggested the Russian could bring around $15 million of backing to Renault, the former champions who faced a big hole in their budget after losing title sponsor ING at the end of last season. (more…)

The time it took Toyota Motor Corp. and U.S. safety regulators to recall millions of Toyotas suspected of sudden-acceleration problems is coming in for scrutiny by a congressional panel that has demanded detailed information from both sides.

The lawmakers are focusing on why several years elapsed after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration started to receive complaints about runaway Toyotas before the Japanese auto maker recalled several of its models to repair a defect that could cause their gas pedals to stick. The House Energy and Commerce Committee has scheduled a Feb. 25 hearing on the matter. (more…)

Mazda Motor Corporation today delivered a Mazda Premacy Hydrogen RE Hybrid to Iwatani Corporation, an energy development company based in Japan. The Premacy Hydrogen RE Hybrid is Mazda’s latest hydrogen rotary engine (RE) vehicle which uses hydrogen as a fuel and features a unique hybrid system.

The delivery marks the fifth Premacy Hydrogen RE Hybrid to be leased by Mazda, and the second to be provided to Iwatani Corporation. The first model was delivered to Iwatani Corporation in May 2009. The new vehicle will be mainly used for business purposes and will be based at the Kitakyushu Hydrogen Station. It is the first hydrogen rotary engine vehicle to be leased in Kyushu, the most southwesterly of Japan’s four main islands.
